Setting up your faction
How a leader activates the faction on Torning, switches features on, hands out permissions to Torn positions and keeps an eye on what changed. For faction leaders, co-leaders and anyone they trust with management.
Activating your faction
Until your faction is activated, the Faction area is locked for everyone in it with the message "A leader or co-leader needs to activate the faction on Torning."
Only Torn's own Leader or Co-leader can activate, and only if the API key they signed in with has faction API access (the AA permission in Torn). Torning checks this when you sign in or add a key, and checks again once a day, so if you were given AA recently it will be picked up.
- Open Faction. If you can activate, you see an Activate card with your faction's name.
- Pick the Data starts date. Torning loads your faction's history from this date forward. It can go back at most one year and cannot be in the future.
- Press Activate followed by your faction's name.
Members who open the Faction area before then see a "Pending" card asking them to message a leader.
Who keeps the faction active
The activation belongs to the person who pressed the button. It stays live while that person is still Leader or Co-leader in Torn, or holds a position you have marked as Leader on the Positions grid (see below). If they leave the leadership, the activation ends and another leader has to activate again. A fresh activation starts with an empty Positions grid.
What happens next
Right after you activate, the Faction area shows an Activating screen while Torning pulls your member list from Torn. As soon as your members have landed, the screen goes away and you are taken to the first faction page you can open.
Every feature starts switched off. Activation only loads your roster, so the Members tab works straight away. To get crimes, wars, chains, accounting and the rest, turn the features on in Faction › Settings › Manage. When you switch one on, Torning starts loading its history from your data start date. Large factions or long windows can take a while to fill in.
The Manage page
Faction › Settings › Manage is where leaders set the faction up. It has five sections: Data window, Features, Data sharing, Positions and Danger zone.
Only leaders can open it: Torn's Leader and Co-leader, and members in a position marked Leader. Every change made here is recorded in the audit log.
Feature modules
The Features section shows one tile per module, each marked Live or Paused. Flip the toggle on a paused tile and a Permission required window lists exactly what Torning will pull from Torn for that module. Press Grant access to switch it on. Turning a module off is a single click.
| Module | What it does | Needs Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting | Tracks every dollar in and out of the faction bank, manual and OC payouts, armoury stock and who has each item out. Opens Faction › Accounting and Faction › Bank. | Yes |
| Crimes | Every organised crime your faction has run, with slot assignments, success rates and payouts. Opens Faction › Crimes and Faction › Settings › Crime setup. | No |
| Ranked wars | Your ranked-war history with full attack chains and end-of-war reward breakdowns. Opens War › Ranked wars. | No |
| Chains | Live chain timers, recent hits, and a chain watch sheet members sign up to by the hour. Opens War › Chain. | No |
| Discord | Puts the bot in your server: alerts for crimes, retaliation and payouts, slash commands, and roles that follow faction membership. Opens Faction › Settings › Discord. | Yes |
| Competitions | Competitions between your members with live standings and a calendar every member can see. Opens the Competitions area and the Competitions and Racing settings pages. | Yes |
Ultra modules
Accounting, Discord and Competitions need Ultra in the faction's leadership: Torn's Leader or Co-leader, or a member in a Leader-marked position, must hold a live Ultra membership. It does not have to be the person pressing the toggle, and the whole faction gets the module. Pro on its own does not count.
If nobody in the leadership holds Ultra any more, Torning switches these modules off within the hour, and unlinks your Discord server if the Discord module was on. They do not come back by themselves: once someone in the leadership has Ultra again, a leader switches them back on here. Turning a module off never needs Ultra.
Accounting availability
Accounting is rolling out to selected factions. If your faction is not included yet, its tile reads Coming soon and cannot be switched on.
Tips
- Flipping toggles quickly is rate limited. If you see "You're toggling features too quickly", wait the number of seconds shown.
- Turning a module off stops its syncs. The data already loaded is kept.
Position permissions
The Positions grid lets you give faction positions (as named in Torn) access to parts of Torning. Each row is one of your positions with its member count. Leader and Co-leader are not listed because they always have everything.
Click a cell to grant or remove a permission. A tinted tick is View (read-only), a solid tick is Manage (can configure). Changes apply straight away to everyone in that position.
| Permission | What it opens |
|---|---|
| View accounting | The Faction › Accounting tab, and the /finances summary in Discord. |
| Manage accounting | Editing in Accounting: new payouts, recategorising and writing off ledger entries, budgets, investors, armoury settings, approving armoury requests and reimbursements. |
| View crimes | The Faction › Crimes page, and /oc missing-members in Discord. |
| Manage crimes | Faction › Settings › Crime setup, and pausing or resuming crimes on the Crimes page. |
| View wars | The War › Ranked wars tab, and the /war and /retal commands in Discord. |
| Manage wars | War setup and payouts, and running war rollcalls. |
| Manage chains | Opening and running the chain watch sheet, chain forecast settings, and releasing other members' booked hits. |
| Manage Discord | Faction › Settings › Discord, and /setup to link a server. |
| Manage competitions | The Competitions and Racing pages under Faction › Settings. |
| Manage intel | Choosing which factions are watched on War › Intel › War intel, TAT sharing, and the activity and scorecard panel in the member drawer. |
| Manage banking | The bankers' queue on Faction › Bank, to pay or cancel vault requests from the web. |
View and Manage are separate grants. Someone who only has Manage crimes can open Crime setup but not the Crimes page, so give both when you want a crimes officer to do the whole job. The same goes for Accounting.
Leadership positions
Under each position name is a Leader switch. Turning it on gives that position everything Torn's Leader and Co-leader have on Torning: every permission above, the Manage page and the audit log. Leader positions also:
- count as leadership for the Ultra modules, so a member in that position with Ultra keeps Accounting, Discord and Competitions running;
- see anything members have shared with "Leaders" in their visibility settings;
- keep the activation alive if the person who activated moves into that position.
Positions only appear once members hold them. If your faction only has Leader and Co-leader, the grid says so.
Data window
The Data window section sets how far back Torning loads and shows your faction's data. It starts at the date you chose when activating.
- Pick a new date and press Save. The earliest allowed date is one year ago, and it cannot be in the future.
- Moving the date earlier makes Torning go back and load the extra history for the features you have on.
- Moving it later only narrows what is shown. Nothing needs reloading.
Asking members to share trades
Most faction data comes through your leaders' API keys. Trade Movements is different: it reads a member's own item market, shop, bazaar and trade logs so Accounting can match bank gives against what they sold. Each member has to agree to it themselves.
The Data sharing section shows how many members have granted it. Press Manage requests to see every member's status: Granted, Requested, Not asked, Declined or Not on Torning.
- Request asks one member.
- Request all asks every member who has not been asked yet. It skips anyone who declined.
- Ask again on a declined member shows them the prompt one more time.
The member sees the request on their Torning dashboard and presses Accept or Decline. They can withdraw it later on Account › Data sharing. Trade Movements only does anything while your faction has Ultra in its leadership and Accounting switched on.
Deactivating the faction
The Danger zone at the bottom of the Manage page has a Deactivate button. After you confirm with Deactivate faction:
- the faction stops appearing on Torning right away and Torning stops calling Torn for its data;
- stored data is kept for 30 days. Activate again within that time and everything comes back;
- after 30 days the faction's stored data is deleted automatically.
Only leaders can deactivate.
The audit log
Faction › Settings › Audit log lists the management actions anyone took for the faction, newest first: activating or deactivating, turning modules on and off, granting or removing position permissions, moving the data start, asking members to share data, settling vault requests and similar changes.
Only leaders can see it. Torning keeps each entry for 14 days, then deletes it.
