In-depth guide: How the OC Optimizer assigns roles & crime setup tweaks

by Cervidaee faction leaders crimes oc optimizer positions

Leader’s in-depth guide to Torning’s OC Optimizer: role influence weighting, seat assignment algorithms, scope break-even gating, and every crime setup tweak available to leaders.

1. Overview of OC slot optimization

Torning’s Organized Crime Optimizer uses a multi-tier greedy algorithm (SpawnRecommender) to build an optimal spawn queue and assign seats across your faction.

Rather than randomly filling seats or using raw player level/stat averages, the optimizer relies on role influence weighting and individual checkpoint pass-rates derived from official Torn crime mechanics.

2. Role influence weighting & seat selection (In-depth)

Not all seats in an OC scenario contribute equally to a crew's overall success rate. In Torn, every role has an exact influence weight percentage derived from crime checkpoint mechanics:

ScenarioRole LabelInfluence WeightFloor %
Stage FrightSniper46.30%76%
Stage FrightMuscle #120.01%66%
Stage FrightEnforcer15.67%65%
Stage FrightMuscle #22.66%60%

How Seats Are Filled

  1. Descending Influence Sorting: The optimizer sorts all slots in a scenario by their influence weight from highest to lowest.
  2. Greedy Member Allocation: High-influence seats (e.g., Sniper @ 46.3% or Car Thief @ 50.9%) claim the available members with the highest checkpoint pass-rates first.
  3. Pass-Rate Floor Protection: A member is only assigned if their rate meets the role's checkpoint floor, preventing weak members from dragging down critical roles.
  4. Synced vs. Estimated Rates: Real synced pass-rates take precedence over estimates. If no synced rate exists, the optimizer uses estimated pass-rates unless strict real rates are enforced by leadership.

3. Scope economy & break-even gating

The optimizer evaluates spawns top-down from your faction’s highest unlocked tier (Ω → Ψ → Φ → Σ → Λ):

  • Break-Even Pass Rate Gate: A crew is only recommended if its influence-weighted pass rate clears the tier's break-even ratio:
    Break-Even Pass Rate % = (Scope Cost / Scope Return) × 100
If a crew cannot clear this rate, spawning that scenario would lose net scope on average, so the optimizer skips it.
  • Net Scope Return Optimization: Among fillable scenarios in a tier, the optimizer picks the scenario that yields the highest expected net scope:
Expected Net Scope = (Crew Pass Rate × Scope Return) - Scope Cost

4. Crime setup tweaks & leader knobs

Faction leaders and crime managers can tune the optimizer's behavior on Faction › Settings › Crime setup using several policy controls:

Setting / KnobDefaultDescription & Impact
Disable / Blacklist Scenarios All enabled Toggle off specific crime scenarios so the optimizer never spawns them (e.g. if your faction lacks specific items or prefers specific tiers).
Member Exclusions None Flag specific members as off-limits for OCs. Excluded members are removed from queue planning and capacity calculations.
Recruit Probation Gate Active Filters new recruits or unverified members from being auto-assigned into high-tier crimes until approved by leaders.
Max Member Uses (member_uses) 2 uses Sets how many planned spawns a single member can appear in across a 7-day planning window (configurable from 1 to 5).
Promotion Threshold (promotion_threshold) 85% pass rate When a member achieves a pass rate at or above this threshold on their current tier (default 85%), the optimizer automatically queues a tier-up test spawn to measure them at the next level.
Require Real Rates (require_real_rates) Disabled When enabled, only members with real synced Torn API pass-rates are assigned to crimes, ignoring the guesser's estimated rates.
Stuck Crew Sacrifices (sacrifice_enabled & stall_grace_minutes) Enabled (0m grace) Allows giving up on stalled or inactive crews after a grace period so locked members can be freed up for active crimes.
Spawn Queue Depth (spawn_queue_depth) 20 spawns Controls how many spawns ahead the optimizer plans into the future queue.
