Reading and writing guides

by liharris30 guides reading writing

How to find, star, track and rate guides, and, if you have the Guide creator role, how to write one and get it published.

Browsing the library

Open Guides from the main menu (on phones it sits under More). Any signed-in player can read guides.

  • Starred: guides you have starred, so your favourites are one click away. It only appears once you have starred something.
  • Categories: every guide category with how many published guides it holds. Click one to open it.

Inside a category, every category is listed beside the guides (as a row of tabs above them on smaller screens), so you can hop between them. All guides takes you back to the library.

Search and tags

Each category page lists its published guides, 12 to a page. Every row shows the title, short description, tags, author, publish date and average rating.

  • Search guides matches guide titles as you type.
  • If any guide in the category has tags, a row of tag chips appears. Pick one to show only guides with that tag, or All to clear it.

The list is ordered for you: guides you have starred come first, then guides you have not read yet, then the highest rated, then the newest. The search and tag you pick are kept in the page address, so you can bookmark or share a filtered list.

Starring and marking read

Both are personal: nobody else sees your stars or read marks.

  • Star: use the star button on a guide's row, or Star at the top of the guide. Starred guides appear in Starred on the library page and sort to the top of their category. Press it again to unstar.
  • Mark as read: use the tick button on a guide's row, or Mark as read at the top of the guide. Read guides get a Read badge and drop below the unread ones. Press it again to mark it unread.

Reading a guide

A guide opens with its category, title, author, publish date, tags and description, followed by its sections.

  • On this page: on wider screens, a list of the guide's sections sits beside the text and follows you as you scroll. It highlights the section you are reading; click a section to jump to it. On phones the sections simply run one after another.
  • The button with the category's name at the top takes you back to that category.

Rating a guide

At the bottom, under Rate this guide, click one to five stars. Next to the stars you see the average and how many ratings it has. You have one rating per guide; click a different star any time to change it.

Becoming a guide creator

Writing guides needs the Guide creator role, which Torning staff hand out. Once you have it, a New guide button appears at the top of the library and of each category page, and an Edit button appears on guides you wrote.

Every new guide, and every change to a published guide, is reviewed by staff before readers see it.

Writing a guide

  1. Press New guide. Starting from a category page picks that category for you.
  2. In Details, fill in the Title (required), pick a Category (required), and add a short Description (optional, up to 1,000 characters) that shows in the guide lists.
  3. Add Tags: start typing to pick from tags already in use, or type a new one and press Enter to create it.
  4. Write your sections (see below).
  5. Press Save draft or Submit for approval.

Sections

Every guide has at least one section. Each section has a title (required) and a body. The section titles become the guide's On this page list, so keep them short and clear.

  • Add section adds another at the end.
  • Drag the handle in a section's header to reorder it.
  • The bin button removes a section (it asks first). The last remaining section cannot be removed.

Formatting

The body editor has bold, italic and strikethrough, Paragraph and Heading 2 to 4 styles, bulleted and numbered lists, quotes, links, images, tables, and a source code view. Links need to be full web addresses (starting with http:// or https://); other links are removed when you save. Scripts and styling are stripped too.

Images

Use the image button in the editor toolbar to upload a picture. It must be an image file of 5 MB or less.

Drafts and submitting

ButtonWhat happens
Save draftSaves your work as a Draft. Only you (and staff) can open it.
Submit for approvalSends it to staff. It shows Pending approval until they publish it.

After saving you land on the guide's own page, with a badge showing its state. Drafts and pending guides do not appear in the category lists, so keep the link or star the guide to find it again: starred guides show under Starred on the library page whatever their state.

If staff send a submission back, it returns to Draft. Edit it and submit again when ready.

Editing a published guide

Open your guide and press Edit. The main button now reads Submit changes for approval.

  • Your changes are saved as a pending edit. The live guide stays exactly as it was until staff approve the changes, and you see "Your changes have been submitted for approval."
  • The editor always opens on the live version. Submitting again replaces any earlier pending edit, so include everything you want changed each time.
  • If staff turn the edit down, the live guide simply stays as it is.

Be careful with Save draft on a published guide: it moves the whole guide back to Draft, which takes it out of the library until it is submitted and approved again. To change a live guide, use Submit changes for approval.
