Getting started with Torning

by liharris30 getting-started api-key navigation settings

How to sign in with your Torn API key, which key level you need, how feature permissions work and how to find your way around Torning. Start here if you are new.

What Torning is

Torning is a companion for the browser game Torn. It reads your Torn data with an API key you give it and turns it into charts, checklists and faction tools. It is made up of:

  • The website, with your dashboard and daily checklist, personal insights (battle stats, networth, stocks), travel planning, faction pages, war tools, competitions and these guides.
  • A Discord bot that can send you personal reminders and post faction alerts in your server. See Account › Discord.
  • A userscript that shows your organised crime assignment on Torn's own faction page. See Tools.

Some parts only appear once your faction has been activated on Torning by a leader or co-leader, and some faction features need a leader with Ultra. Everything personal works on its own.

Signing in

Torning has no passwords. You sign in with a Torn API key.

  1. On the sign-in page, click Create a key on Torn. This opens Torn's API settings with a new key named Torning filled in. Create it and copy the 16-character key.
  2. Paste the key into the API key box.
  3. Tick Remember me if you want to stay signed in on this device. In the installed app it is ticked for you.
  4. Click Continue.

Torning checks the key with Torn, works out its access level and stores it encrypted. The first time you sign in you are asked to accept the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy, then Torning opens the welcome tour.

If sign-in fails

  • Invalid API key: the key is wrong or has been deleted in Torn. Check you copied all 16 characters.
  • A Limited or Full Access API key is required: your key is Public Only or Minimal. Create a new key with a higher level.
  • Too many attempts: after five failed tries you have to wait before trying again. The message tells you how long.

Every new account gets a free 14-day Ultra welcome trial, once per Torn player. See the Pro and Ultra guide for what that includes.

API key access levels

Torn keys come in four levels. Torning needs at least Limited Access to sign in, and some pages need Full Access.

Key levelWhat you get on Torning
Public OnlyNot accepted. You cannot sign in or add it.
MinimalNot accepted. You cannot sign in or add it.
Limited AccessEverything except the pages below. The Insights area opens with Insights › Stocks (the Market view).
Full AccessEverything, including Insights › Battle stats, Insights › Networth, the Performance view on Insights › Stocks and a few daily checklist items.

Pages that need a higher key show a padlock in the menu with a note such as "Add a Full Access API key to unlock this area." Clicking Add a key on one of those pages takes you to a short form where you paste a Full Access key. Once it is saved you go straight back to the page you wanted.

You can keep several keys on your account at once. See the guide on your account, API keys and privacy.

Terms and Privacy

Before you can use Torning you accept the current Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Each page shows its version number and when it last changed.

  1. Read the Terms and click Accept & Continue.
  2. Read the Privacy Policy and click Accept & Continue.

If you would rather not accept, Back to login signs you out, and the Export or delete your data instead link takes you to Account › Privacy & data, which always stays open to you.

When either document changes in a way that matters, Torning asks you to accept the new version the next time you visit. Until you do, background syncing of your personal data pauses and the userscript stops showing your data.

You can reread both documents at any time from the account menu, or see which versions you accepted and when under Account › Privacy & data.

Feature permissions

Your API key lets Torning read your data, but it only collects what you switch on. Each personal feature asks for permission the first time you open its page, lists exactly what it will pull, and starts collecting only when you click Grant access.

PermissionWhere you grant itWhat it turns on
Battle Stats InsightsInsights › Battle statsYour strength, defense, speed and dexterity history, growth charts and stat-gain analysis.
Income InsightsInsights › NetworthWhere your money comes from and goes, day by day.
Stocks PortfolioInsights › Stocks, Market viewYour holdings, their current value and your cash position.
Stocks InsightsInsights › Stocks, Performance viewStock activity, dividends, profit and loss over time.
Daily ChecklistHome › Dashboard or Home › ChecklistYour vitals and wallet on the dashboard, and the daily checklist covering bars, cooldowns, bank investment, education, missions and more.
Personal AlertsAccount › DiscordDiscord messages when your energy or nerve fills, a cooldown ends or your flight lands.
Trade MovementsA card on your dashboard, when your faction's leadership asksLets your faction match bank payouts against your market and trade sales. It only works while your faction has a leader with Ultra and Accounting switched on.
Honors & AwardsOn for everyoneTracks the honors and medals you have earned.

To stop a feature, go to Account › Data sharing, find it under Granted features and click Revoke. Torning stops pulling that data straight away. What it already collected is kept.

The welcome tour

The welcome tour lives at Account › Get started and has five steps:

  1. Tour: each area, what it holds and, when it is locked, why.
  2. Features: turn on the features that need your permission (Daily Checklist, Personal Alerts, Battle Stats Insights, Income Insights, Stocks Portfolio and Stocks Insights). See exactly what gets pulled lists what each one reads. Turn off stops one again.
  3. Visibility: choose who else can see your demographics, insights, battle stats, data and networth, and whether your name shows on rankings. Everything starts as Private. Save and continue saves your choices.
  4. Profile: set your country and timezone, and choose whether times read in TCT or your own zone.
  5. Discord: link your Discord account so the bot knows who you are, and join the Torning Discord server for help and news.

Use Next and Back to move between the steps. Finish on the last step takes you on to the page you were opening. Skip ends the tour straight away.

Until you finish or skip it, Torning offers the tour once each time you sign in, including on accounts made before the tour existed. You can replay it any time from Account › Get started.

Finding your way around

Torning is split into areas: Home, Flights, Insights, Faction, War, Tools, Guides and Account. Competitions also appears when your faction runs them.

On a computer

  • Side rail: the icons down the left side take you to each area. Hover an icon to see its name, or click Pin menu open at the bottom to show the names all the time. The bottom of the rail also has Join our Discord and your account menu (your Torn name).
  • Top bar: shows the area you are in and its tabs. Some tabs have their own second row of tabs underneath, for example Faction › Settings and War › Intel. The top bar also holds the search box, the status strip and the TCT / Local clock switch.

On a phone

  • The bottom bar has Home, Insights, Faction, War and Tools.
  • More opens a sheet with the other areas and everything in the account menu.

Locked items

An area or tab you cannot open yet shows a padlock. Hover it to see why, for example a higher API key, a faction that has not been activated, or a permission only a leader can give you. Tabs that need Ultra in your faction's leadership carry an Ultra pill.

The account menu

Open it from your name at the bottom of the rail, or from More on a phone. It holds the Account pages (Data sharing, Key usage, Discord, Privacy & data, Get started), Demographics, Visibility, Get Pro (or your current tier), the light and dark Theme switch, Install app when your device supports it, the Terms and Privacy Policy, and Sign out.

Site notices

Announcements from Torning, such as a planned restart, appear as a strip under the top bar with the time they are about. You can dismiss a notice with its close button.

Search and jump (Ctrl+K)

Press Ctrl+K (or ⌘K on a Mac), or click the search box in the top bar, to open the command palette.

  • Start typing to filter every page you can open. Locked pages are left out.
  • Type two or more letters to also search your own faction's Members (opens their Torn profile), Ranked wars by opponent name and Competitions by title, up to five results each. Wars and competitions only appear if you can open those pages.
  • Use the up and down arrows to move, Enter to open and Esc to close.

The status strip

The row of small chips in the top bar shows your live state at a glance. It refreshes every 30 seconds while you can see it, and the countdowns tick down in between.

  • Chain: your faction's chain count and its timer, or the cooldown. Click it to open War › Chain.
  • Ranked war: the score of your current war, or a countdown to its start, if you can see ranked wars.
  • Flight: where you are flying and when you land, or where you are abroad.
  • Energy and Nerve: your current bars. Clicking them opens Torn's gym or crimes page in a new tab.
  • Your Pro or Ultra badge, which opens the Pro and Ultra window.
  • Offline, if your device loses its connection.

Every chip says how old its reading is when you hover it. If a reading is out of date, its age shows on the chip and the "Live" marker goes away, so an old number never looks current.

On a phone the strip gets its own scrolling row on the Home and Tools pages.

TCT and Local time

The clock switch at the right of the top bar decides how every time on Torning reads.

  • TCT (Torn City Time, which is the same as UTC) is the default.
  • The other option shows your own time zone, labelled with its short name (for example BST or JST), or Local.

Local time uses the time zone you set in Demographics. If you have not set one, choosing Local opens Demographics so you can. Switching reloads the page.

Switching only changes how times are shown. It never moves a plan, an alert or a result you already set up. Calendar dates and Torn's daily reset stay on TCT.

Demographics

Open Demographics from the account menu. Until you have set a country, the account menu (and More on a phone) shows a small dot to remind you.

  1. Pick your Country.
  2. If your country has more than one time zone, pick your Timezone. Otherwise it is filled in for you.
  3. Click Save.

Your time zone powers the Local clock. Who else can see your country and time zone is controlled by the Demographics row in your Visibility settings. To remove your location, clear the country and save.

Visibility settings

Open Visibility from the account menu to choose who else can see the data Torning holds about you. Everything starts as Private.

SettingCoversChoices

Leaders means your faction's Leader and Co-leader, plus any positions marked as leaders on Faction › Settings › Manage.

Two more options:

  • Share with opposition during termed ranked wars appears once Battle Stats is not Private. It shares your stats with the opposing faction during termed ranked wars to improve war matching.
  • Rankings enters you in the cross-player standings in the Rankings view of Insights › Networth. It is off by default, and also needs Income Insights granted.

Click Save to apply your changes.

Installing Torning as an app

You can add Torning to your home screen or desktop and open it like any other app.

  • When your browser supports it, the account menu shows Install app. Click it and confirm.
  • On a phone or tablet, the dashboard also shows an Install Torning card from your second visit. Choose Install, or Not now to hide it for 30 days.
  • On an iPhone or iPad, Install app shows the steps instead: tap Share in Safari, choose Add to Home Screen, then open Torning from its icon.

The installed app keeps you signed in by default, and shows an offline page if you lose your connection.
